The U.S. Forest Service (USFS) is a federal agency that manages and protects public lands, especially forests and grasslands. The USFS is the largest forestry research organization in the world.
The USFS's mission is to “sustain the health, diversity and productivity of the Nation's forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations”. The USFS does this by integrating a variety of factors into how each different forest is run, including any social, economic and ecological factors.
